Trinity College London CertTESOL (five weeks)

This intensive TESOL course leads to the award of the prestigious Trinity College London Level 5 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL)

The CertTESOL is awarded by Trinity College London. It is recognised by the British Council and is highly respected throughout the world. The certificate has been accredited by Ofqual (Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator) at Level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework.

It is an initial training course, designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English, although it is also appropriate for those who have some teaching experience but wish to consolidate it with formal TESOL training.  The course is open to both native and non-native speakers of English. For those teachers who speak other languages, the techniques learned on the course can easily be adapted to the teaching of other languages.

This course may be taken as an intensive 5-week course or a slightly less intensive, modular course consisting of two 2-week modules in Bournemouth, with a 5-week home study period between them.

The intensive 5-week course includes 150 timetabled hours of attendance plus additional hours of private study to allow for lesson planning and work on assignments.

This practically-orientated course will provide you with a solid foundation in the basics of TESOL teaching.  It will also equip you with skills to evaluate your own lessons and develop further in your teaching after the course has ended. Learning takes place through an intensive programme of training, which consists of the following:

Teacher Training Sessions

These sessions, which take place daily, focus on practical application to the classroom (both group and one-to-one classes). You will be introduced to a wide range of principles and TESOL teaching skills and learn how to

  • identify your students' language needs
  • analyse and teach English grammar, vocabulary, functional language and pronunciation
  • develop your students' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
  • manage classes and motivate students
  • develop and find appropriate materials for use in the classroom
  • prepare lessons and evaluate your own teaching

Observation of Experienced Teachers

You will observe 4 hours of language classes taught by experienced teachers. Guided observation tasks will help you focus on specific aspects of the lessons.

Teaching Practice

You will teach language students from all over the world in practice classes.  During the course, you will have the experience of teaching at two different levels. Teaching practice will begin right from the first week and you will teach a total of 6 hours during the course. Trainees are placed in small, teaching practice groups, each supervised by an experienced trainer. This allows for a high level of tutor support, including detailed guidance and oral and written feedback for each lesson.

Assignments

There is no examination at the end of the course but during the 5 weeks, in the evenings and at weekends, you will complete a range of practically-focused assignments as well as working on your lesson plans in preparation for teaching practice.

Tutorials

Mid-course tutorials provide each trainee with the opportunity to review his or her progress.  Tutors are available discuss any issues of concern at any time.

Christian TESOL Focus

The course has a strong Christian emphasis.  Each morning begins with worship and prayer, and one afternoon each week there will be talks and workshops on issues of relevance to the Christian TESOL teacher.  Throughout the course, tutors are available to give information and advice to trainees about their future career and ministry.

TESOL Qualification

The Trinity College London Level 5 CertTESOL will be awarded to candidates who have successfully completed both the teaching practice and the written assignments.

Location

The course takes place in Bournemouth, on the south coast of England. This is a beautiful area which is popular with holiday visitors and international students alike.

Pre-Course Preparation and Support

To assist you in preparing for the course, we provide you with a free, pre-course self-study pack and offer our online Grammar Foundations course at a special, discounted fee.

On completion of the course, you will be granted free, permanent membership of our Network Online Community. This allows free access to an online zone where you can continue to interact with other Christian TESOL teachers and with the tutors after the course has ended.  The zone also contains ideas and resources for classroom activities and information about English teaching opportunities worldwide.
