Face to Face

All International Training Network face-to-face courses take place in Bournemouth, U.K. unless otherwise indicated.  All participants in a face-to-face course become members of our Network Online Community.  This allows free, permanent access to an online zone where you can continue to interact with others after the course has ended.  The zone also contains ideas and resources for classroom activities and information about English teaching opportunities worldwide.

Trinity College London TESOL Certificate Course (5 weeks intensive)

This course leads to the award of the Trinity College London Level 4 Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL). It is an initial training course, designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English, although it is also appropriate for those who have some teaching experience but wish to consolidate it with formal TESOL training.  The course is open to both native and non-native speakers of English.

The CertTESOL is recognised by the British Council and is highly respected throughout the world. For information on Trinity College London, click here: www.trinitycollege.co.uk The certificate is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority as a level 4 qualification. For those teachers who speak other languages, the techniques learned on the course can easily be adapted to the teaching of other languages.

This practically-orientated course will provide you with a solid foundation in the basics of TESOL teaching.  It will also equip you with skills to evaluate your own lessons and develop further in your teaching after the course has ended. Learning takes place through an intensive programme of training, which consists of the following:

Training Sessions:  These sessions, which take place daily,  focus on practical application to the classroom (both group and one-to-one classes).  You will be introduced  to a wide range of principles and TESOL teaching skills and learn how to:

  • identify your students' language needs
  • analyse and teach English grammar, vocabulary, functional language and pronunciation
  • develop your students' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
  • manage classes and motivate students
  • develop and find appropriate materials for use in the classroom
  • prepare lessons and evaluate your own teaching

Observation of experienced teachers: You will observe 4 hours of language classes, guided by tasks to help you focus on specific aspects of the  lesson.

Teaching practice: You will teach language students from all over the world in practice classes.  During the course, you will have the experience of teaching at two different levels. Teaching practice will begin right from the first week and you will teach a total of 6 hours during the course. A maximum of 5 trainees in each teaching practice group allows for a high level of tutor support, including detailed guidance and oral and written feedback for each lesson.

Assignments: There is no examination at the end of the course but during the 5 weeks, in the evenings and at weekends, you will complete a range of practically focused assignments, as well as working on your lesson plans in preparation for teaching practice.

Tutorials: mid-course tutorials provide each trainee with the opportunity to review his or her progress.  Tutors are available discuss any issues of concern at any time.

In addition, the course has a strong Christian emphasis.  Each morning begins with worship and prayer, and one afternoon each week there will be talks and workshops on issues of relevance to the Christian teacher.  Throughout the course, staff are available to give information and advice to trainees about their future career and ministry.

The Certificate will be awarded to candidates who have successfully completed both the teaching practice and the written assignments.

Introductory Course (1 week)

You will learn the basic skills of communicating with those who speak little English and discover how to help them learn English through communication activities of the type used in English language camps, informal clubs and short-term placements. The course covers basic techniques for managing classes and teaching vocabulary and pronunciation. It also introduces you to basic language analysis and to activities which will develop the students' listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. You will learn to plan classes around a theme using a variety of materials including pictures, role play, songs and video. During this week you will have the opportunity to try out the techniques and activities in practice lessons when you will teach language students from all over the world.

Teaching Practice - The Classroom Experience (1 week)

This course is appropriate for those people who have had some previous training and would like the opportunity to focus on their practical classroom skills through guided and observed teaching practice.  Some may take it after having completed an introductory or online course.  Qualified TESOL teachers may welcome an opportunity to refresh their teaching skills in a supportive, Christian environment. In addition to the teaching practice there will be training sessions and workshops relevant to the needs of the course participants.
